Background

SMRU Ltd is the commercial arm of the Sea Mammal Research Unit.  The company was formed as a result of increasing requests for advice and ecological services from marine industries, in particular the marine renewables sector. 

Following formation and development of finance systems in 2006, the company employed scientists and support staff in early 2007. 

The underlying objectives behind SMRU Ltd are to provide funding to the Sea Mammal Research Unit through return of our profits as gift aid to the University of St Andrews.  A proportion of this funding will be made available to support fundamental marine mammal research, and SMRU Ltd has contributed 100% funding to support several PhDs within SMRU.
